The main task of the Swiss Cooperation Office (SCO) in is to plan, monitor and evaluate its development and humanitarian aid programmes in Afghanistan. All in all, the SCO administers some 30 projects and an annual budget of some 18 million Swiss Francs (14 million USD). Switzerland is also an active member of the assistance coordination mechanism in Kabul.
The Cooperation Office is an antenna of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC, which is part of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The office in Kabul was established in 2002 – before that, the programme was steered from the Islamabad office. Currently, SCO has twenty employees, five of them working at program level.
As Switzerland does not have an Embassy in Afghanistan, SCO also plays the role of a liaison office to the Swiss Embassy in Islamabad, which is accredited in Afghanistan.
